Unfortunately, we don’t all have a wine cellar under our houses where we can store endless bottles of our favourite tipple, so we’ve put together a few tips and tricks we’ve come across down the years to help you store your wines properly at home.
Temperature
The most important factor when it comes to storing wines is the temperature they are kept at. We’d recommend storing our Bacchus and Ortega wines at between 10-15°C. This doesn’t have to be in a fridge, it can be in a cool garage or any cool, dark place around your home.
The key is consistency, as a fluctuating temperature can cause the wine to change and taste different.
Store away from direct light
Keep your wines away from windows and sources of direct sunlight. The average household light gives off heat, which is not good for wines, if possible, stick to LED lighting, which creates a soft glow without giving off any heat and is cheaper to run too.
Consider vibration
Sounds odd, but have you considered the vibrations your wine bottles might experience if they are stored near bouncy floorboard or washing machines? Wines need to be kept still to stop possible alteration of the components of the liquid.
Store labels clearly
When storing your wines, be sure to have all labels facing outwards if the bottles are standing or upwards if the bottles are laying down, that way you have easy access and know what you’re selecting.
Storing opened wines
If you’ve opened a bottle of wine and haven’t finished it, you can store it in your fridge, standing up, using a wine stopper or replacing the cork, for between two to five days.
