Wine and cheese can be a match made in heaven, as long as you get the pairings right!
Here’s some of our top tips to help you match your wines and cheeses in preparation for your next dinner party.
Equal the intensity
If you have an intense tasting cheese, then it’s a good idea to pair it with an intense tasting wine. Wines with an alcohol volume over 14.5% work better with more intensely flavoured cheeses.
Stick to location
Wines and cheeses that are made in the same regions often work well together.
Match smelly cheese with sweet wines
If you’re one of those people who think the stinkier the cheese, the better, then you’re in luck, as sweeter wines work wonderfully with washed-rind and blue-veined cheeses. This is because the sweetness in the wine helps balance out the cheese and makes it taste creamier.
If in doubt, go nutty
If you’re ever in doubt about what cheese to pair with a wine, one of the safest bets is a firm, nutty cheese. Nutty cheeses have enough fat to counterbalance tannins in red wines, but are also delicate enough to compliment whites, so everyone’s a winner!
Go Bacchus or Ortega
As we have mentioned here on our blog before, white wine goes wonderfully well with cheese, especially soft, creamy ones such as brie, blue ones and even cured cheeses. Our Bacchus wine goes beautifully with goats’ cheese too.
