These days we reach for a glass from the cupboard without even thinking about it, but have you ever stopped to appreciate the glass you’re pouring your drink into?
Thanks to the evolution of the wine glass, we can now appreciate the characteristics of colour and the aromas that accompany the enjoyment of each wine we drink.
Ancient times
In Ancient Egyptian times, guests were offered wine in goblets of all sorts of different shapes and sizes, and also made from a variety of different materials. Many were bowl like and were ceramic, bronze, brass and sometimes silver.
Only rich families could afford goblets in Roman times, which meant a single goblet was often used for the whole family.
The Bronze Age
During the Bronze Age, the population of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula made cups out of fired clay.
Technique of glassblowing
Eventually, the technique of glassblowing allowed goblets and other wine vessels to evolve and brought about the widespread use of wine glasses.
From the 18th century, glass gradually gave way to crystal, which was shinier and more malleable.
Different glasses for different wines
These days there are many different styles of glasses and tumblers used for drinking wine.
Did you know, there are certain glasses that are made specifically for certain wines? These help ensure the drinker gets to know the wine via taste and smell.
It’s very important that you select the right type of glass. Depending on the glass you’re using, you will be able to savour all the qualities of the wine.
