If you’re unable to make one of the dates of our free tours and tastings as part of English Wine Week (Saturday, June 18 to Sunday, June 26, 2022), don’t worry, as we have decided to share our top tips for the process of tasting wine, so you can try it yourself at home.
Once you have your chosen wines, it’s time to start the tasting!
Pick the right glassware
It’s important you drink your wine from the correct type of glass. You should also ensure you hold the glass appropriately. A wine glass should be held by the stem to help prevent the heat and potential scent from your hand interfering with the aromas from the wine.
Pour and swirl
Fill the glass one third of the way up with your chosen wine and gently swirl it around the glass. Doing this helps to increase the amount of oxygen in the glass and intensifies the aromas. However, this is mainly for red wines.
Sniff, sniff!
Give your wine a sniff. Take in all of those wonderful aromas. You will smell different things depending on the complexity of the wine. Our Bacchus wine offers complex aromas of elderflower, layered with kiwi, grass and a herbal overlay while our Ortega wines are delightfully perfumed with refreshing lemon and orange aromas.
Taste
At last, taste the wine! It’s important to sip the wine and swish it around your mouth to absorb the flavours. Take your time to work through the flavours. During a wine tasting, you spit out the wine in order to try other varieties. But at home, you can drink it!
Follow our top tasting tips and you will be an expert in no time!
